5 Orlando Ways To Thank Mom on Mother's Day

Some people believe the media messages that thrusting a mimosa in a woman’s hand and calling it a reward is enough. I’m not one of those people. When it comes to thanking the women in my life for being the superpower, hold-it-together while keeping-it-together people who seem to multitask in ways my kid-free brain can’t fathom I want to do better than a bottle. Bottles are what you give to babies.

Here are 5 great ways to thank Mom, no matter what her personality is.

  1. Lil 500 Go-Karts - Grab a pizza and head to Lil 500 where you can reserve a table for free. Get Mom a pack of tickets for the adult track while Dad and littles tackle the kid zone. Mom can scream, cry, laugh, spin out, and go as fast as she likes for as long as those tickets last.

Tips: Messy bun hairstyle will happen and track dust will turn your skin some kind of grey color so bring wet wipes. And sunscreen. And bugspray. And a hat. And sunglasses. No helmet required.

  2. Cabin Camping - Lake Louisa State Park has some pretty sweet cabins and a zillion activities from biking to SUP to canoeing. Challenge the family to unplug all weekend and reconnect. Sit and make a fire and relax. All you need to bring is food, your toothbrush, and your best ghost stories.

Tips: A two-night stay is mandatory. Definitely bring bugspray and SPF. Cabins are fully accessible and if it’s too fancy for ya, there are primitive campsites available too.

  3. Mount Dora Modernism Museum - This place has some of the most eclectic pieces of furniture every created. In the 80s, designers got together to create furniture like no one had seen before or has seen since. (Think Pee Wee’s Playhouse.) The BOWIE | SOTSASS | MEMPHIS collection is one of the finest ever curated. Don’t miss seeing it before it switches out with new pieces on June 3rd.

Tips: Awesome A/C. Definitely watch the 20 min documentary in the back. Make a reservation to grab lunch down on the water at Pisces Rising, or if you’re sending Mom off with her friends, get her a rez at Goblin Market or 1921. REPEAT - MAKE A RESERVATION.

  4. See Orlando by Scooter - Scooting around town is easy and fun. We have a great community that allows for scooters to travel to all our Orlando neighborhoods with ease. Check out some of my faves by scooter. Rentals start at $45/day at ScooterMax. Rent one for Mom and one for her friend so they can go exploring on Mom’s day off.

Tips: Rent a helmet even though you don’t have to. Get her going with a great morning smoothie or juice from Sanctum. Challenge: Find all the painted electrical boxes in Orlando.

  5. Nails. N-A-I-L-S. Can we just take a minute to respect the nail artist. The salons around town make it a true delight to sit ankle deep in water while vibrating to our heart’s content. Zero judgment. 100% pampering. Give her the DELUXE everything package with hot stones and the works. Even better, schedule a second appointment three weeks from now so it’s a special surprise. Two of my favorite places to go are Heavenly Foot Massage and Nails by Mercede. (Mercede is a super rad mom herself!)

Tips: Tuck a new bottle of her favorite polish in her bag along with a couple movie passes to recline and see a movie before heading home.

The other thing is…get her out of the house and living her best life…without you. The best way to reward a woman for work well done is by giving her a day off. Like OFF off. From chores and complaining and worry and faces in her face. Women tend to have a yarnball of thoughts and lists and schedules batted around by mental kittens all. day. long. Taking a break from that is a true reward. A handmade pop-up card isn’t a bad thank you either!
